Where Voice Search Answers Come From

Page attributes shared by results Google reads aloud as voice answers, from Backlinko's analysis of 10,000 Google Home results (study published 2018).

How Google Picks a Voice Answer

Most voice search answers come from pages that already rank near the top of Google. In Backlinko's analysis of 10,000 Google Home results, 74.9% of voice answers were read from a page ranking in the top 3 organic results, and 40.7% were pulled directly from a Featured Snippet.

In other words, ranking well in regular search is still the clearest path to being chosen as the spoken answer.

Technical signals showed up consistently too. 70.4% of the pages Google read aloud were served over HTTPS, and 36.4% used Schema markup to label their content. None of these are guarantees on their own, but together they describe the kind of fast, secure, well-structured page that voice assistants tend to surface.

These figures come from Backlinko's 2018 study, the most recent large-scale teardown of what voice assistants actually read back. The exact percentages predate the current crop of assistants, so treat them as the direction of travel rather than this year's snapshot:

  • Earn a top-3 organic ranking.
  • Compete for the Featured Snippet.
  • Serve over HTTPS.
  • Add Schema markup.
